What is AB-650?

AB-650: Administering Microsoft 365 and AI Services is the new exam for administrators who manage Microsoft 365 and its AI features. Microsoft expects experience with Microsoft 365 workloads and Microsoft Entra ID, an understanding of Defender XDR, and familiarity with Microsoft Graph PowerShell.

Should you take MS-102 or wait for AB-650?

  • You are 70-80% ready for MS-102: book the exam now and pass before 30 November. Slots fill up near retirement dates.
  • Your employer or a client asks for "Microsoft 365 Administrator Expert": take MS-102 before the deadline.
  • You are starting from zero: two months may not be enough. Learn the fundamentals (Entra ID, Exchange Online, Defender, Purview) and target AB-650.
  • Your organisation is rolling out Copilot: AB-650 matches your real work better.

Either way, the fundamentals are the same. Nothing you study for MS-102 is wasted.

Already certified? What happens to you

  • Your earned certification stays on your Microsoft Learn transcript.
  • Microsoft associate and expert certifications normally renew every year through a free online assessment. After an exam retires, the renewal option for that certification ends, so renew before the retirement date if your renewal window is open.
  • Plan to add AB-650 later to show current Microsoft 365 and AI skills.

30-day plan to pass MS-102 before the deadline

  1. Days 1-5: tenant setup, domains, licensing, roles, Microsoft 365 admin center.
  2. Days 6-12: Microsoft Entra ID: users, groups, sync (Entra Connect / Cloud Sync), MFA, Conditional Access, PIM. Read our 25 Conditional Access policies.
  3. Days 13-19: Defender XDR: Defender for Office 365, Defender for Endpoint, incidents, Secure Score. Practise with Advanced Hunting KQL queries.
  4. Days 20-25: Purview: sensitivity labels, DLP, retention, eDiscovery, audit.
  5. Days 26-30: take Microsoft's free practice assessment, review weak areas, use the exam sandbox, and sit the exam.

Use a free Microsoft 365 trial or developer tenant if available to practise in a real admin center.
